The truth is that Zapatero’s ideology explains his decisions and his attitude toward terrorism. In first place, the progressive person believes that the Spanish system and the Western order are unfair. For this reason it generates terrorism. Download PDF

The most controversial decision that Jose Luis Rodríguez Zapatero has made in his three years in office was not to pull Spanish troops out of Iraq or legalize gay marriage. Instead, it was the prime minister's move this month to convert the prison sentence of a high-profile member of ETA, the Basque separatist group, to house arrest. Descargar PDF

If America unified following 9/11, Spain split along sharply sectarian lines within hours of the commuter-train bombings.

Iran has an interesting take on international law. According to Iranian Foreign Minister Manuchehr Mottaki, the UN Security Council's Chapter VII resolution from last December requiring Iran to cease all its uranium enrichment activities is illegal. As he put it Wednesday during a friendly visit in Turkey, "We were against [the resolution] for being illegal and politically motivated."Anyone with even a casual acquaintance with international law should recognize that Mottaki's statement is not merely incorrect. The deadly car bomb set off by the Basque separatist group Euskadi Ta Askatasuna (E.T.A.) at Madrid's Barajas International Airport on December 30, 2006 altered Spain's political landscape significantly. The most powerful bomb ever planted by E.T.A. caught the government completely by surprise and shattered Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero's attempt to solve the 40-year Basque conflict through dialogue. It also sent hundreds of thousands of Spaniards onto the streets in rallies to protest the attack and left a reeling Zapatero fighting for his political future. Download PDF

Spain has given a reasonable impression of a shambles since the Basque separatist terrorists of ETA closed out 2006 with the detonation of a large bomb at Madrid airport, killing two people and demonstrating what they thought of Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero's peace negotiations.

This is not the first time ETA has declared a cease-fire. Each previous time, they eventually returned to their bombs and bullets. As it is, this current guarantee, this “permanent cease-fire,” is only a conditional one. ETA is exchanging peace for independence. The length of this cease-fire will depend on how eager the current socialist government in Madrid is to have it be permanent. Descargar PDF

The more time passes after ETA’s ceasefire announcement, the less likely this ceasefire is a first step to the group’s disbanding looks. A process built on a succession of lies can only produce a peace of lies. Download PDF

The message ETA released this past weekend and its bombing attack yesterday have confirmed GEES’ most recent analyses, revealing how unfounded the Prime Minister’s talk of a coming ETA ceasefire really is. Download PDF

The only place ETA’s ceasefire exists is in the “enlightened” mind of a man carried to the post of Prime Minister of Spain thanks to an historic accident. Download PDF

One of the most serious risks to the Zapatero’s supposed peace process is the possibility his surrendering the Rule of Law could lead to the spontaneous creation of a new GAL: in other words, the emergence of an armed response to ETA. This might seem remote, but no one should discard it when analyzing the long term situation. Download PDF

The kilograms of explosive in ETA’s bombs are proportional to the concessions offered up by Zapatero. But it looks like the Prime Minister is willing to offer a truce from the Rule of Law to force a truce in terrorist activity. This is the reason why the chief prosecutor was fired. Download PDF

ETA is pushing any expectations of a truce far into the distance. It issued a communiqué demanding political conditions like self-determination in order to advance the hypothetical peace process. By planting more and more bombs, it called into question the Prime Minister’s stubborn determination to come to an understanding with the terrorists. Download PDF

After winning its internal battle, ETA is now focused on winning the external one. Following Al Qaeda’s attacks in the United States, Spain, Great Britain and many other countries, few things were as roundly repudiated and fought by the international community as terrorism. Countries that in the past had viewed terrorism as someone else’s problem and even considered some groups romantic independence fighters, realized Jihad terrorism was a global threat specifically affecting Western democracies. Moncloa, the Spanish Prime Minister’s official residence, continues to send out messages that a truce with ETA is imminent. The government delegation in the Basque Country has been waiting since summer for a fax that never seems to arrive. Mr. Lopez, Secretary General for the Basque Socialist Party (PSE), further humiliates himself proposing a shotgun wedding with Batasuna to “humanize” the conflict and recognizing the right to self-determination for which ETA has murdered close to a thousand innocent men and women.
